Question--the Sonett V4 grill is supposed to be just the color of the casting, or painted silver or ? Mine is flat black but that color was applied after it was installed because it is unpainted underneath the overlap area (near the bolts). Unless it is painted in place, which seems doubtful.

My original 69 is flat black. I have never had it off so do not know about underside.

My original and replacement were both natural, unpained.
I cleaned with mag wheel cleaner and a skotchbrite pad.

My first 2 Sonetts were bought in the early 70s and both had cast aluminum or aluminum alloy grills that had just the natural oxide finish. They had a rough feel, as expected from a casting.

But was there a difference between 68s and some part of the 69s? Maybe some of the last V4s for model year 69 got the flat black treatment they went to in the 70s. My guess is no.

Thanks for all the answers. Sounds like unpainted natural cast color is the winning vote, although in the case of the original came as black, raises the question again. Could the original color make any difference--mine is yellow? As far as being a late '69, the serial number is 1643, so later in the year I think. Dave

I purchased a '57 today.  It had been stored for years in a barn, so floor rusted out but structure solid and car is complete.  It has a very low VIN number and the markings on it suggest it was in first boatload of Saabs to US.  It has 044 in yellow marker under trunk and has NYC written under the 044.  Not sure but it is a rare car...I now have a red, grey, and blue 93A but only two are rust free.
