Q&A on Sonett III to SonettV4 transmission swap

I am getting ready to swap out the transmission from my Sonett V4 for a transmission from a Sonett III. The V4 transmission is singing in 3rd gear (plus it needs a fixed throwout fork) so it's going for a rebuild this summer. I have a few questions:

- I know the cover needs to be rotated 180 degrees, but is it really that simple?

- Is it easier to keep the cover from the V4 and install it in place on the III transmission?

- Or should I just remove the III cover and rotate it 180 degrees?

- I am a bit concerned as to what to do with the cover off. Should I check tightness or wear in the box?

- I will be using blue RTV in place of a gasket, but what should I do to line up the shifter in the cover with the rest of the box?

- Are there any instructions in the SAAB manuals, Chilton books, etc.?--I just want to do this right.

Hopefully, someone on the list has done this and has some words of wisdom.

Thanks,
Pat Quinlan

It is the same cover but the shaft exits on there other side and I
believe it is a different shaft for the floor shift components. Just
swap them. The three shift shafts should be in line ( neutral) and the
two little lock-out pawls go in the diamond. You'll see. Goop will work
fine for sealing. Pretty much all you can do with the cover off is
inspect the teeth on the synchros and gear wear (or rust) in general.

No, you cannot rotate the cover. Keep the cover with the car, the SIII has a ball and knuckle joint sticking out on the right side, the 96/SII just has a rod on the left side.

Yes.

No, won't work 180 deg rotated, if you can fit it at all.

Are there any instructions in the SAAB manuals...
Haynes has instructions on fitting the cover. Take care to locate the 2 moveable dowels on the cover in the right position between the selector rods.

Make sure you plug any threaded holes in the rear cover that were previously used for attaching the shifter linkage, otherwise the gearbox will leak massive amounts of oil

But the linkage is in the *top* cover, not the *rear* cover.
