Hello All,
What have you all done to treat rust on the underbelly of your car? I've read about POR but it's expensive and hard to apply properly. How about Eastwood rust "encapsulation" spray - does it really work? Other options?
Thanks in advance for any/all tips.

Jim,

I haven't found POR difficult to use especially on "unseen" areas. Yeah, better prep is good and takes time but the stuff just brushes on.

Best way is to chemically remove the rust then prime with an epoxy primer but it takes a LOT more time and work.

The thing with POR15 is that a small can goes a very long way. It is quite
thin. So the cost evens out over time or space (area).
Applying it is pretty much the same as any other paint. It works better
than anything I've ever used, by a fair margin.

Take great care when re-sealing it. Clean the can sealing surface very well
because if you don't, the next time you try to open it will be an adventure.

Common trick is to put Saran wrap or something similar between top and can to get it open.

I'm not a big POR fan.

First, I don't like having to buy several separate products which seem to be overpriced.
Second, I don't like the idea of having to wash off the area with water.
Third, it's very difficult to topcoat. You must use their special priming products for it to stick. I did a 96 floor with it and wanted to spray on a topcoat that was the color of the car. Just normal single-stage paint. It didn't stick at all and I found out that I would have to add an additional POR priming product.
Fourth, I've done all the steps using all their products just as they recommended and didn't think it lasted all that long.

A few years ago, I tried a product called Rust Bullet. You can find it on the web. It calls for two coats, but no pre-treatment steps or any of that. And it lasted longer than the POR. Plus you can topcoat it directly. I just checked their website and I see they now sell a pretreatment product as well as a glossy topcoat product. I don't think you have to go that route though. About $50 a quart for the regular Rust Bullet.

I have used a rust converter called Ospho from my local hardware. Simply wire brush all the loose rust away and apply a liberal coat and let soak in. Turns the rust black and provides a metal etch priming. You might need a second coat.

I have used this with excellent results on cars, snowblowers, iron railings, any metal that rusts. I have not found any paint or primer that does not adhere to it and it provides a solid base for Bondo and other body fillers.

Simple, easy and not expensive.

Ospho is the best of it's kind I have ever used. Period.

I've used POR-15 on at least 3 VSAABs in the past 12 years, but I never kept any of the cars past a 2-3 year period after application, so I don't have long-term results. But ........ it seemed easy to use, and did the job I expected... so I was happy in the short-term, at least.

I guess I could survey the current owners to see what they observe in the future.

At last, I was able to get my 63 wagon from storage after purchasing it.  It has 42k original miles and I am third owner.  It has no rust and an all original interior.  I will be taking it to the Saab picnic this summer.  The interior is amazing with only some stitching in seats broken.  Dean Gordon helped me transport it in his custom vintage Saab trailer.  It runs and drives beautiful and Mike St Pierre is schedule to drive it if he comes to the picnic....you up to it Mike?
