All,

I'm hoping someone has run into this before and can help. I am trying to
adjust the shifter on my 1973 96. I need to pull the adjustment slightly
closer to the driver. However, the column is at the top. The shifter
assembly is touching the back of the steering wheel and cannot move further.
Looking underneath the column, it appears that I have only used one-third of
the available adjustment along the track.

Is this normal? The only thing that I can think of is that this year has
a collapsible steering column and over the years it has been pushed in.
When looking at the shifter universal at the firewall, the taper pin is
horizontal, and there appears to be a vertical hole on the shifter linkage,
slightly closer to the firewall. I'm not sure that I can turn change the
alignment of the universal, or if that would make any difference anyway.

Thanks in advance for any ideas.

Michael

1st was a little hard at times, but was making sure I had reverse. I
moved the shifter forward a touch and lost 3rd and 4th, I pulled it back to
the max, and have 3rd and 4th again. There is virtually no movement forward
on the lever when in 3rd. 1st still feels a little dodgy.

Michael,
I recently changed the shifting/steering column on my "68 Sonett.
The collapsible column position had to be just right to adjust the shifting.
It was quite difficult to get the "collapsible" column to move. I had to take it out to break collapsible column loose, adjust, and put it back in.
( I have to do everything twice, if not more)

Did some cars have a roll pin locking the column in place?
