My 1974 99 (djet) has 12.6 volts at the battery, and the moment I place the ignition to the start position, voltage drops to 11.6.  Car is having trouble starting.

So,  I trace and traced the source, and discovered, that when I remove the wire off the ignition coil ( the number 1- not the positve 15) wire (ignition condenser) the issue goes away.

The low voltage results in a very weak crank(no start)..

Any help/suggestions would be great.   Does this mean the condenser is bad?

Thanks in advance.  Kari

I would first check the engine ground and battery connections.

Kari,

Pull the coil wire and have someone observe the spark as you crank. You should get an inch or more of spark, and it should be blue-to-white not yellow.

Condensers are very cheap, and should be changed when you change the points. If in doubt throw it out.

Consider Pertronix..

But if your BATTERY voltage drops that much just from turning on the key, it's probably time for a new one.
