vSAABers:

I'm in need of a head light relay for my Sonett III. It's the squarish one marked as "Light Relay" on the diagram on page 300-3 of the Sonett Supplement. Took the thing off and apart in the hope that I could spot a broken wire or contact. No luck. Put the thing back on sans the cover and the headlight did come on when I pressed the terminal down on coil 1. So, I'd say it's a bad coil. Looking though EBay I noted that relays for the pre-93 900s looked liked they'd work-six terminals marked the same as the OEM part and two coils. Has anyone had success in using one of the "Cariter" relays being sold for the 900'? If not that one, what alternatives have you used? Thanks

The relays for the 96, 99, 900 all function the same. The terminal codes may be a bit different but just look at the schematic. The older ones in aluminium housing are mechanical while the red 900 one is electronic. I have fitted a 900 one in my '79 96.

avoid the Red ones, they have problems and I don't believe they interchange with the aluminum housing ones.. 99 ones have the same mounting bracket with the 900 ones you have to be a little creative with to mount them.

Yes, the red plastic 900 ones sometimes develop cracks in the soldered connections causing weird effects, but if you open them and resolder the connections they will work again.

I was sent on a business trip to New Bedford Mass and wondered any vintage Saab members are in the area or talk Saabs or maybe have some old cars/parts for sale?

This is how I replaced the relay in my ´79 96 with a 900 one;

Should work in a similar way in a Sonett.
